Team Member Spotlight: Mark Rehberger—From Beer Marketing to Backend Reliability

WhatConverts isn't just a product—it's a team. And without that team, we know we'd be nowhere.

That's why each month, we recognize one team member who's gone above and beyond in their role, and we share a little bit about who they are and what makes them so integral to WhatConverts. (They also get a bit of free swag from our merch store!)

This month, our spotlight employee is Mark Rehberger, Data Systems Architect.

Tell us a little about your career path.

How did you first get into the SaaS or tech industry, or what led you to WhatConverts?

My career path took the scenic route. I started as a marketing brand manager for a German Oktoberfest import brewery, running Google campaigns by day. I loved the marketing side, but I kept getting pulled toward the tech that powered it. So I went back to university for computer science, cut my teeth at another insurance SaaS company, and eventually found my way to WhatConverts, where marketing and tech finally meet.

What do you enjoy most about your role at WhatConverts?

Is there something unique about working on our team that you find exciting?

What I enjoy most is the variety. No two days are ever exactly the same, so I'm always solving something new instead of running on autopilot. Keeps the job interesting and keeps me on my toes. It also helps that I genuinely like everyone I work with.

What’s one project or achievement at WhatConverts that you’re particularly proud of?

This could be a specific individual contribution, a customer success story, or a team accomplishment.

I'm proud of how we handle infrastructure updates behind the scenes. We update production servers, rotate RDS, and deploy code through rolling provisioning with absolute zero downtime. It's basically open heart surgery on live hardware, yet customers never notice a thing. The hardware and software underneath are constantly being updated and replaced, and from the outside everything just keeps humming along.

How do you like to unwind after a busy day in the world of SaaS?

Tell us what you like to do, and how you maintain work-life balance.

To unwind I play soccer with my kids, make trips to a nearby coffee and gelato place with my wife, and I'm slowly trying to teach myself Spanish. I also love slow traveling with the family whenever we get the chance. Mixing family time, a little treat, a new challenge, and a bit of adventure keeps things balanced.

What’s a fun fact about you that your colleagues might not know?

It can be anything—from an interesting fact, to a hidden talent, to quirky hobbies.

Fun fact: I'm the king of odd jobs. Over the years I've been a paperboy, a petting zoo cashier, an embassy intern, a snowboard instructor, a beer marketer, a Lyft driver, a tour guide in Shanghai, a tech consultant, an insurance SaaS Java developer, a professional dog walker, and an AWS architect. If there's a weird job out there, odds are I've tried it.

If you could instantly learn one skill (personal or professional), what would it be?

Perhaps you want to code like a pro, master the art of PPC, or pick up a non-work-related hobby?

I wish I were more musical. I'd love to instantly know how to play the guitar, no years of practice and sore fingers required.

What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?

This can be work-related (like a tool or trend) or something personal (foods, pets, places, TV shows - anything!).

Right now I'm obsessed with IT security and the role AI plays in it. It's a constantly shifting puzzle, with AI working both as a powerful new tool and a brand new threat, and I can't stop reading about where it's all headed.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, professionally or personally?

How has this advice helped shape your life or your career?

The best advice I've ever gotten: just staying in motion is the most important part. You don't have to have it all figured out, you just have to keep moving. It's kept me from getting stuck waiting for the "perfect" moment, and honestly it explains my whole winding career path.

You’re given the chance to win $5 million, but you have to beat 100 people at a single task. You can choose the task—what would it be and why do you think you’d win?

(This is a great opportunity to highlight a unique skill, or stead-fast know-how!)

My task would be badminton. I played competitively for 10 years, so I like my odds of making it to the final and maybe taking it all. Most people think it's a backyard game until they're up against a real smash.
