WhatConverts isn't just a product—it's a team. And without that team, we know we'd be nowhere.
That's why each month, we recognize one team member who's gone above and beyond in their role, and we share a little bit about who they are and what makes them so integral to WhatConverts. (They also get a bit of free swag from our merch store!)
This month, our spotlight employee is John Tomory, Solutions Engineer.
Tell us a little about your career path.
How did you first get into the SaaS or tech industry, or what led you to WhatConverts?
Wow, where do I even begin? I was the very first customer of WhatConverts. It’s a long story, and honestly, one of my favorites to tell.
I started using WhatConverts back in 2012 when it was still in its infancy. It was not the polished lead tracking and ROAS reporting engine it is today. It was scrappy, evolving, and full of potential. I got to see it grow in real time, feature by feature, improvement by improvement.
Then in 2018, life shifted. When I moved, I saw an opportunity. Instead of just being a customer, I decided to become part of the team.
Going from user to team member gave me a completely different perspective. I understood the product from the ground up because I had relied on it. I knew the pain points, the wins, the “aha” moments. Now I get to help build, support, and improve the very thing I once depended on.
That journey from first customer to team member still feels surreal, and I would not trade it for anything.
What do you enjoy most about your role at WhatConverts?
Is there something unique about working on our team that you find exciting?
I love watching agencies grow from the trial stage into multi-account, production-level tracking operations. Seeing that evolution is powerful.
They start out testing the waters, learning the platform, and building confidence. Then something clicks. Systems get tighter. Reporting gets cleaner. Teams move faster. Before long, they are managing multiple accounts with real structure and scale.
Watching that transformation happen never gets old.
There is always something new every day. A different form to troubleshoot. A new customer with unique goals. New software to integrate. A feature to explore or refine. The pace never slows down, and that constant change keeps it interesting.
What’s one project or achievement at WhatConverts that you’re particularly proud of?
This could be a specific individual contribution, a customer success story, or a team accomplishment.
There are so many. Trying to choose just one after eight years feels almost impossible.
What stands out most is not a single feature or ticket. It is the impact. It is watching agencies go from guessing at performance to confidently proving ROI. It is helping a customer solve a tracking problem that other providers said was impossible. It is seeing an integration finally click after troubleshooting and knowing their reporting will never be the same again.
If I had to narrow it down, I am most proud of the role I have played in bridging the gap between complex tracking setups and real-world marketing teams. Taking messy forms, custom builds, complicated ad accounts, and turning them into clean, reliable data pipelines. That transformation is powerful.
The real achievement is consistency. Showing up, solving hard problems, supporting customers at every stage, and helping agencies grow from trial to full production tracking. Eight years of that adds up to something I am genuinely proud of.
How do you like to unwind after a busy day in the world of SaaS?
Tell us what you like to do, and how you maintain work-life balance.
When my workday is done, I make a conscious decision to shut it down. The tabs close. The notifications can wait. I take a moment to reset and appreciate what I have right in front of me.
Home. Time with family. The simple things. I’ll pet the dog, enjoy dinner with my amazing girlfriend, maybe put on a movie, or unwind with a video game for a bit. Nothing complicated. Just real life, uninterrupted.
That balance matters. SaaS moves fast, and there is always another problem to solve tomorrow. Stepping away helps me come back sharper, more focused, and ready to tackle it again.
What’s a fun fact about you that your colleagues might not know?
It can be anything—from an interesting fact, to a hidden talent, to quirky hobbies.
One thing a lot of people might not know about me is that I volunteer in my community with my local Community Emergency Response Team program.
CERT focuses on disaster preparedness and response. We train for real-world scenarios like severe weather, search and rescue, medical triage, and supporting first responders when things get chaotic. It is hands-on, practical, and very real.
It is a completely different pace from SaaS, but in some ways it taps into the same mindset. Stay calm. Assess the situation. Solve the problem in front of you.
Being part of CERT gives me a strong sense of purpose outside of work. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that skills, whether technical or practical, are always more powerful when they serve the community.
If you could instantly learn one skill (personal or professional), what would it be?
Perhaps you want to code like a pro, master the art of PPC, or pick up a non-work-related hobby?
If I could instantly learn one skill, I would love to become a pilot.
There is something powerful about taking full control of an aircraft, understanding the systems, reading the weather, and navigating through open sky. It combines technical knowledge, discipline, and real-time decision-making. You are responsible for the machine, the route, and the outcome.
Flying feels like the ultimate blend of precision and freedom. It is structured and procedural, yet once you are up there, it is just you and the horizon.
What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?
This can be work-related (like a tool or trend) or something personal (foods, pets, places, TV shows - anything!).
I am a technophile through and through. I tinker, learn, experiment, and build anything I can get my hands on. It keeps my mind moving and gives me something new to figure out all the time.
Right now, I am deep into building Meshtastic nodes for off-grid, decentralized communication. There is something incredibly satisfying about setting up low-power mesh networks that can operate independently of traditional infrastructure. It feels practical and futuristic at the same time.
As a licensed amateur radio operator, that ties directly into emergency communications through the Amateur Radio Service. Being able to build systems that could actually function when everything else is down is not just a hobby. It has real-world value.
At the end of the day, whether it is SaaS, mesh networks, or radio, I just love understanding how systems work and then pushing them a little further than they were meant to go.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, professionally or personally?
How has this advice helped shape your life or your career?
“Checking all the boxes doesn’t mean you’ve done the job.”
That stuck with me because it calls out the difference between completion and excellence. You can meet every requirement, follow every step, and technically finish the task. But if the outcome is not solid, usable, and meaningful, then the work is not really done.
Professionally, it has shaped how I approach projects and customer support. I do not stop at “it works.” I push for “it works well.” Clean implementation. Reliable data. Clear outcomes. No loose ends.
Personally, it has pushed me to focus on impact over optics. Effort matters, but results matter more. That mindset has helped me raise my standards and take ownership of the quality of what I put into the world.
You’re given the chance to win $5 million, but you have to beat 100 people at a single task. You can choose the task—what would it be and why do you think you’d win?
(This is a great opportunity to highlight a unique skill, or stead-fast know-how!)
I make a killer cheesecake. I don’t know if it would beat 100 people, but I’d enjoy it, even if I lost. Bring me a fork!
