Setting Up Dimension Groupings
Dimension groupings is a powerful tool for organizing and better understanding your data. By grouping related values, you can display them in new columns on your dashboard, making your insights clearer and more actionable.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up dimension groupings using a common example: Google Ads.
How Dimension Groupings Work
The Scenario:
A customer clicks on your Google Ad and lands on your website. At that moment, WhatConverts captures key marketing data, such as:
- The landing page URL
- Google Ads parameters
- Campaign
- Content
- Keyword
- Google Click ID
These data points provide valuable insight into ad performance, but sometimes not all details like the campaign name are available.
The Solution: Dimension Groupings
Dimension Groupings allow you to bridge that gap by mapping known identifiers (e.g., campaign IDs) to meaningful names.
For example, if your landing page URL contains a campaign ID, you can create a Dimension Grouping that:
- Searches the landing page for specific campaign IDs
- Automatically assigns the corresponding campaign name to each lead
This enhances your reports by clearly labeling leads with marketing data that would otherwise be hidden.
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Dimension Groupings
Step 1: Access Dimension Groupings
1Navigate to the Reports tab.
2Select Dimension Groupings.
Step 2: Create a New Dimension Grouping
1Click Add Dimension Grouping.
2Enter a name (e.g., Campaign Name).
This becomes the title of the new column on your Leads dashboard.
Step 3: Select the Grouped Dimension
1Choose the dimension you want to group.
For Google Ads, this is usually Landing Page (where the campaign ID appears).
Step 4: Define Group Name and Rules
1Under Group Name, enter the campaign name you want to display.
2Add the corresponding campaign ID.
This tells the system to search for that campaign ID on the landing page. If found, it will automatically assign the campaign name to the leads.
3Click Finish.
Step 5: View the Results
1Go back to the Leads page.
You’ll now see a new column (e.g., Campaign Name) automatically populated with the campaign name — derived from your new grouping.
