Test Your Tracking Numbers

Testing your WhatConverts tracking numbers ensures that your dynamic number swapping and lead tracking are working as expected. This process helps confirm that calls are being attributed correctly before your campaigns go live.

Clear Attribution Before Testing

Before you test your tracking numbers after any update, it’s important to clear any stored attribution. Your browser may hold cookies that remember a previous source, which can affect your number swap results. Clearing these cookies ensures a fresh session for testing.

Option 1: Use a URL Parameter

You can clear the WhatConverts tracking cookie by adding the following parameter to the end of your site’s URL: ?wc_clear=true&gclid=test

Example: https://yourwebsite.com/?wc_clear=true&gclid=test

  • wc_clear=true removes the WhatConverts attribution cookie.
  • gclid=test is optional and sets your attribution to Google CPC.

After loading this URL, browse your site as a new visitor and confirm that your tracking number appears correctly.

Option 2: Remove WhatConverts Cookies Manually

If you prefer to delete only WhatConverts cookies (without clearing all browser data), you can remove them through your browser’s developer tools.

  1. Open your browser’s Developer Tools.
  2. Select the Application or Storage tab.
  3. Expand Cookies and select your website’s domain.
  4. Delete the following cookies:
    1. wc_client
    2. wc_client_current
    3. wc_swap
    4. wc_visitor
  5. Refresh your site and verify that a new tracking number is displayed.

Option 3: Clear Browser Cookies

If you continue to see the same number or attribution, clear your browser’s cookies and cache for your website.

  • In Chrome: Open Settings Privacy and SecurityClear Browsing Data, select “Cookies and other site data”, then clear.
  • In Firefox: Select the lock icon in the address bar, choose “Clear Cookies and Site Data”.
  • In Safari: Go to Preferences Privacy Manage Website Data, then remove your domain.
  • In Edge: Open Settings Privacy, Search, and Services, choose “Clear browsing data”, then clear cookies.

Tip: Use an incognito or private browsing window when testing to avoid cached or stored attribution data.

Perform a Test Call

Once cookies are cleared, perform a test to confirm your tracking setup.

  1. Visit your website using a campaign link or through a traffic source you want to test.
  2. Check that your tracking number swaps correctly on the page.
  3. Call the number using a phone that has not been used for testing before.
  4. Verify that the call appears in your WhatConverts dashboard with the correct attribution.

Note: Your attribution model determines the source and medium you see on your leads. If you use the same phone number or email address for tests, it can connect these leads. By default, WhatConverts uses a First-Click attribution model that shows the initial visit’s source and medium.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Use private browsing mode to avoid reusing an old cookie session.
  • Make sure the tracking code is installed on every page you’re testing.
  • Disable browser extensions or ad blockers during testing.
  • Wait a few minutes after testing for the call or lead to appear in your dashboard.
  • If your tracking number doesn’t change, confirm the script is installed above the closing <body> tag and isn’t being blocked by caching or other scripts.
