Fix Missing Traffic Source in Leads
If leads are appearing in WhatConverts without traffic source information, the tracking script is most likely missing from one or more pages of your website. The script must be active on both the page where the visitor first landed and the page where they converted. This article walks through how to verify your script is correctly installed.
The tracking script is not installed on every page
WhatConverts can only capture traffic source data on pages where the tracking script is present. If the script is missing from the landing page or the conversion page, the lead will appear without attribution data.
How to verify the tracking script using page source
To troubleshoot this issue:
- Open your website and right-click anywhere on the page then select "View page source".
- Press CTRL+F and search for your unique Profile ID, found under "Tracking" then "Tracking Code" in your WhatConverts dashboard.
- Confirm a script tag similar to the following is present on the page: <script src="//s.ksrndkehqnwntyxlhgto.com/*****.js"></script>
- Repeat this check on both the landing page and the conversion page.
How to verify the tracking script using browser cookies
To troubleshoot this issue:
- Open your website and right-click anywhere on the page then select "Inspect".
- Select the "Application" tab at the top of the inspector window.
- Under the "Cookies" section, select your website URL.
- Look for a cookie named wc_visitor.
- Confirm the cookie contains your WhatConverts Profile ID. If it does, the tracking script is successfully installed and active on that page.
The tracking script is installed via Google Tag Manager but not firing correctly
If your tracking script is deployed through Google Tag Manager, the script may not be reaching visitors if the GTM container itself is not set up correctly.
How to troubleshoot a Google Tag Manager installation
To troubleshoot this issue:
- Confirm the main Google Tag Manager snippet is present on every page of your website using the page source method above.
- Log in to your Google Tag Manager account and open your WhatConverts tag.
- Verify the tag is set to fire on All Pages or the specific pages where tracking is required.
- Use GTM's Preview mode to confirm the tag is firing correctly before publishing any changes.
A WordPress caching plugin is serving an outdated version of the page
On WordPress sites, caching plugins can serve older versions of your pages to visitors, which may not include the most recent tracking script installation.
How to troubleshoot caching issues on WordPress
To troubleshoot this issue:
- Log in to your WordPress admin panel and open your active caching plugin.
- Clear all cached files to ensure visitors are served the most current version of each page.
- Re-verify that the tracking script is present using either the page source or cookie method above.
