Form Tracking FAQs
This article answers common questions about how form tracking works in WhatConverts, including supported form types, setup options, and troubleshooting common issues.
What types of forms can WhatConverts track?
WhatConverts can track most web forms, including:
- Standard HTML forms
- WordPress form plugins (Gravity Forms, Contact Form 7, Ninja Forms, WPForms)
- Landing page builder forms
- Popup or modal forms
Can WhatConverts track third-party forms?
Yes. WhatConverts can track many third-party forms if they are embedded on your website.
Does form tracking work with multi-step forms?
Yes. Multi-step forms can be tracked as long as the final step triggers a standard form submission event.
Can WhatConverts track forms inside an iframe?
Yes, but the WhatConverts tracking script must also be installed inside the iframe where the form exists. If the script is only installed on the parent page, the form submission cannot be detected.
For more information on this process, please see Track Web Forms in iFrames.
How do I set up form tracking?
Form tracking can be set up using either:
- Form Finder: Automatically detect and set up forms on your website.
- Manual Setup: Manually set up forms using their trackable attributes.
Why isn't the Form Finder detecting my form?
The Form Finder may not detect a form if it is:
- Loaded dynamically with JavaScript
- Inside an iframe
- Built without <form> tags
In these cases, you can configure the form using Manual Setup or contact WhatConverts Support for assistance.
What information does WhatConverts capture from a form submission?
WhatConverts captures both the form submission data and marketing attribution data.
Form data may include:
- Name
- Phone number
- Message or inquiry details
Marketing attribution data includes:
- Traffic source
- UTM parameters
- Landing page
- Campaign and keyword data (when available)
Can WhatConverts capture UTM parameters from form submissions?
Yes. If UTM parameters are present in the visitor’s URL, WhatConverts captures them and associates them with the form lead. This helps identify which marketing campaigns generated the lead.
Why are my form submissions not appearing in WhatConverts?
Common causes include:
- The WhatConverts tracking script is not installed on the page
- The script is blocked by caching plugins or cookie consent tools
- The form has not been set up in WhatConverts
- The form is inside an iframe without the tracking script installed inside the iframe
Can WhatConverts track forms without <form> tags or a trackable attribute?
No. Forms must be wrapped in <form> tags and include a trackable attribute such as an ID, Class, Name, or Action.
